TAUNTON — Fresh bagels anyone?

New York Bagel Company of Fall River and Dartmouth has a lease agreement with the Taunton owners and developers of a gas station and convenience store being built on a land parcel listed as 1939 Bay St.

The future Mobil brand self-serve station and Premier Convenience store being built by Bruce Thomas and Daniel Lima will sit on a heavily traveled section of Bay Street in Taunton’s north end.

It also happens to be strategically positioned near Interstate 495, Myles Standish Industrial Park and a plaza that includes Northwoods Medical Center and a variety of businesses including BJ’s Wholesale Club.

Taunton’s version of the popular bagel, sandwich and pastry eatery will occupy 1,200 square feet of space inside a 5,000-square-foot building, according to Thomas.

New York Bagel Company was recently purchased by Fall River City Councilor Cliff Ponte and his husband-and-wife partners Kyle Lima — who works as a Fall River firefighter and works as an agent in Ponte’s Fall River real estate office (and is not related to Daniel Lima) — and Dawn Lima, who has prior management experience with Dunkin’ franchises.

Ponte, who also owns Al Mac’s Diner and Al Mac’s On-The-Go in Fall River, said he signed a long-term lease to occupy space inside the new Bay Street convenience store.

“We expect to be there a very long time,” said Ponte.

He says “sales have been great” at both New York Bagel stores since he and his partners bought the 35-year-old business nearly two months ago from original owners Steven Ginsberg and Steven Cohen.

What is New York Bagel?

A go-to for its wide variety of authentic New York bagels with an array of tasty toppings, New York Bagel has been serving up morning fuel and afternoon pick-me-ups like coffee, pastries, breads, sandwiches, and salads for over three decades.

Bagels made daily in Dartmouth

All of the bagels, Ponte said, are made daily at the New York Bagel Company restaurant in Dartmouth.

The Taunton site, as is the case in Fall River and Dartmouth, will feature a drive-thru lane. Ponte said current drive-thru sales account for 70% of revenue.

The dining room inside the Fall River restaurant on President Avenue had been closed since the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 but reopened after Ponte and his partners bought the business.

Jim’s Organic Coffee will be in-house brand

He said there will be limited seating inside his Taunton eatery.

The veteran Fall River city councilor and former mayoral candidate has chosen Wareham-based Jim’s Organic Coffee as his in-house coffee brand.

Ponte, 35, is confident the Bay Street location in Taunton will mark the launch of a strategy for expanding New York Bagel Company’s brand as other convenience store opportunities arise.

“We will be open to any and all options for expansion,” he said, adding that “we have an exciting brand and a niche product, and we do a really good job of running it.”

‘Great addition to the city of Taunton’

Former Taunton City Councilor Chris Coute said New York Bagel Company’s presence on Bay Street represents “a great addition to the city of Taunton.”

“It shows that businesses with certain amenities want to come to the city,” he said.

Coute knows a thing or two about privately owned, economic development projects.

The managing partner and chief executive of Brownstone Realty Group LLC has a track record for buying distressed or stagnant properties and developing them either for residential reuse or — as was the case with the former Niaki Medical Building — selling for a profit after making extensive renovations.

Coute also owns a bar and music room downtown at 9 Taunton Green called The National Charter 957.

He says the Bay Street bagel, gas and convenience store project stands more than a fighting chance for success — in large part due its proximity to Myles Standish Industrial Park with its 110 companies and 8,000 employees.

“It’s the most successful industrial park on the East Coast,” said Coute, which is why the 1939 Bay St. spot “is a fantastic location.”
