Watch a Trailer for ‘Challengers,’ the Tennis Drama Starring Zendaya

Challengers, a tennis drama directed by Luca Guadagnino (perhaps best known for Call Me By Your Name), was one of the most anticipated films of fall 2023, but that anticipation will have to carry on a little longer, as MGM pushed the movie back to spring 2024.

The movie, which features a love triangle between characters played by Zendaya, Josh O’Connor (of The Crown fame), and Mike Faist (who starred in West Side Story), was scheduled to debut at the Venice Film Festival on August 30, and then hit theaters on September 15, 2023 in the U.S. However, due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, the studio is moved the drama to a April 26, 2024 release.

On New Year’s Day, Zendaya shared the poster for Challengers:

Here’s everything we know so far about the film.

Challengers is centered on a love triangle.

Written by Justin Kuritzkes and directed by Guadagnino, Challengers is part sports film, part comedy, part romantic drama. Here’s the plot summary: “Challengers stars Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, a former tennis prodigy turned coach and a force of nature who makes no apologies for her game on and off the court. Married to a champion on a losing streak (Mike Faist), Tashi’s strategy for her husband’s redemption takes a surprising turn when he must face off against the washed-up Patrick (Josh O’Connor) – his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend. As their pasts and presents collide, and tensions run high, Tashi must ask herself, what will it cost to win.”

Zendaya trained with former tennis star Brad Gilbert.

Zendaya plays a tennis star in the film.

“She’s wonderful,” Guadagnino told Variety. “I mean, wow. We edited the movie and we almost actually don’t use any of her double. She’s so good.” All three leads, the director added “spent like three months working very hard—technically, athletically.”

“I think those three characters in that movie are beautifully complex and really fucked-up people that I love very much. And a sports film, why not?” Guadagnino told IndieWire.

In February 2024, the studio released a new trailer (watch above).

The film will premiere in spring 2024.

Challengers was originally going to premiere out of competition at the 80th Venice Film Festival on August 30, going to a wide release in September. In July, however, the studio announced that it would be pushing the premiere back to be released on April 26, 2024 in the wake of the Screen Actors Guild strike which, among other things, would prevent the films stars from being able to promote the movie.

As Challengers is a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) film, which is now owned by Amazon, the film will likely be available to stream on Prime Video some time after its theatrical premiere.
