Paul George Could Become 76ers’ Only Target After 26YO Knicks Star Quashes Daryl Morey’s Plan

Once again, the Sixers failed to get over the hump as they got eliminated in the first round by the Knicks. And the playoff disappointment made President Daryl Morey realize that they might need a third star to fulfil their Championship dream. With the available cap space to sign a big-name player this summer, Morey is in search of the missing piece. While there have been speculations that Paul George is Morey’s primary target, there are also murmurs about Philly’s interest in Knicks star OG Anunoby. However, the latest development in OG’s status might narrow down Morey’s options.

After joining the Knicks mid-season, OG proved his worth by helping the team reach the Conference semis. And had he not suffered a hamstring injury during the playoffs, there is a good chance the Knicks might still be competing for a title. So, with a nearly $20 million player option for next year, there have been talks between OG and the Knicks about a contract extension. While there were reports suggesting disagreement between both parties, Kris Pursiainen’s latest tweet revealed that OG and the Knicks are likely to reach an agreement to keep the former Champion in New York.

While it is amazing news for the Knicks fans and organisation, it could be a dagger in Daryl Morey’s heart. As per NBA Insider Ian Bagley, OG was one of the offseason targets for the Sixers, “Paul George is also a target for Philadelphia. But if the Sixers can’t get George, I could see them making a big offer to Anunoby.” Apart from the money the Sixers could offer OG, they also had the leverage of having OG’s Championship coach Nick Nurse as their current head coach. And that could have drawn Anunoby to Philly. But now that OG is reportedly looking to stay in NYC, the Sixers might be left with only one option.

Can the Sixers still hit the jackpot with Paul George?

While OG was likely Philly’s backup option, there is still a chance that they might get their hands on their primary target, Paul George. With a nearly $49 million player option for next year, PG could opt out of that deal and test free agency this summer. And Philly has the cap space to offer him a max contract and lure him into playing alongside Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. Yes, George could make more money staying in LA as he could sign a four-year $221 million deal with the Clippers if he opts out. However, that still doesn’t solve the problem PG has been having since he moved to LA.

Despite playing alongside a superstar like Kawhi Leonard for several years, PG has failed to win a title with him. Maybe it’s because Kawhi is frequently found on the bench during crucial games because of his constant injury troubles. Even this year, he missed multiple games in the series against Dallas, which was a huge reason why the Clippers got eliminated in the first round. So, if PG wants to win a ring, he might have to consider other options that could take him closer to his goals. And Philly might be the perfect destination for him. Do you think PG will part ways with the Clippers and ‘Trust The Process’ in pursuit of his first title?
