Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation EMPLOYMENT READINESS PROGRAM CLASSES are 9-11 a.m. at the Resiliency Center, Army Community Service classroom, 600 Thomas Ave. Classes include “CAREER EXPLORATION AND DEVELOPMENT” April 1, May 1 and June 7; “RESUMÉ WRITING” April 12, May 10 and June 14 — registration is required; “FEDERAL EMPLOYMENT” April 18, May 17 and June 21 and 6-8 p.m. May 10 registration is required; and “INTERVIEW SKILLS AND PROFESSIONALISM” April 26, May 24 and June 28. Deadline is March 31 for 2023 FFAM Essay Contest

The Friends of the Frontier Army Museum at Fort Leavenworth invite students in grades 9-12 to participate in FFAM’s annual essay contest for cash prizes. This is a wonderful opportunity to research and write about a topic pertaining to military history and/or Fort Leavenworth. FFAM is looking forward to receiving thoughtful and inspiring essays from students. Contest rules and details are listed below.

Essay Topic:

Supply routes, modes of transportation and security were essential to westward expansion.

Describe how these routes came to be, what role Fort Leavenworth played in enabling westward expansion, and the challenges faced by both the military and civilians after arriving in the west.

Writers can incorporate challenges relating to the geography, security, logistics (initial supplies/restocking), political environment, economic development and more.

Writers are encouraged to use more than online resources for their research — visit the Frontier Army Museum for inspiration and research. The museum is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free of charge.

Cash Award

• First-place winner will receive $1,000.

• Second-place winner will receive $500.

• Third-place winner will receive $250.


The essay contest is open to students in ninth through 12th grades from schools in close proximity (20 miles) to Fort Leavenworth.

Essay submissions will be accepted through March 31, 2023. E-mail your essay to with the official entry form ( com/file/d/1NvOZlFKZxQquGok5kDyJN5CGo4yWOKs9/view) together in one e-mail message.

DO NOT put your name on the actual essay, just on the entry form.

Submissions should be 1,000-1,500 words, double spaced with references.

Reference the essay rubric before submitting the essay.

Winners of the contest will be notified by e-mail around the end of April.

The first-place winner may be asked to read his/her essay to the FFAM members at the organization’s May Museum Night.

All winners will be awarded their cash prizes at the FFAM May Museum Night or via mail.
