THE PREDICTION

World number 12 Cam Norrie put in his best performance of the season to blast past an agitated Andrey Rublev on Tuesday. The 27-year-old claimed his most prestigious title here at the delayed October edition in 2021 and he has reached a third-successive quarter-final now after losing at this stage last season to Carlos Alcaraz. Norrie beat Alcaraz as recently as late last month to win the Rio Open title on clay, his first ATP 500, after finishing runner-up to the Spaniard at the Argentina Open. World number 16 Frances Tiafoe took Alcaraz to five sets in an epic eventual defeat in the semi-finals of the US Open last summer. The 25-year-old is yet to rediscover that very top gear since but he has enjoyed an excellent run in a dream draw so far to make the quarter-finals at Indian Wells without dropping a set. This looks a steep incline in challenge for the American, though, and taking on Norrie first-up on what could prove a rather damp day in the desert suggests Norrie is the slightest of favourite to edge through here.

Norrie beat Tiafoe in three sets at the Delray Beach Open two years ago in their only previous encounter and with three sets likely again here backing the Brit to take at least one of them looks the suitably cautious move.
