Real to win another entertaining encounter

Liverpool have a mountain to climb if they are to remain in this season’s Champions League, as they must overturn a 5-2 deficit in the second leg of their round-of-16 tie with Real Madrid at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

In an eventful first game at Anfield on February 21, Jurgen Klopp’s side raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to strikes from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah – but Real responded in spectacular fashion with five unanswered goals, including braces for Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema.

While that has put the reigning European champions in complete control of the tie, since that first-leg defeat Liverpool have enjoyed their own sensational victory, thrashing Manchester United 7-0 in the Premier League. However, that win was on home turf, with the Reds having struggled on their travels throughout the campaign.

These two sides have become familiar foes over recent years. Wednesday’s clash in Madrid will be their eighth Champions League meeting since 2014, with two of those encounters in finals.

What all seven of those previous meetings have in common is that Real are yet to taste defeat, winning six and drawing one, but even the stalemate was a more positive result for Los Blancos, as it helped seal their place in the semi-finals of the competition during the 2020-21 campaign.

Liverpool’s last victory over the 14-time European champions came more than 14 years ago and supporters will not head to the Spanish capital with much optimism after the Reds’ Premier League defeat at Bournemouth over the weekend.

That 1-0 loss at the Vitality Stadium was Liverpool’s seventh away defeat of the season in the domestic top flight, while they were also thrashed 4-1 at Napoli earlier on in their European campaign.

However, the Reds have scored in each of their previous 14 away games in the Champions League and did display their attacking potential during the first leg.

Klopp’s men can certainly get on the scoresheet at the Bernabeu, but history suggests Real will emerge as the winners on the night and in the tie.

Vinicius to torment Liverpool again

Real forward Vinicius Junior has been the scourge of Liverpool over recent years, as he has netted five times in four appearances against the Reds, including his brace at Anfield last month and the only goal of the game in last season’s Champions League final.

Still only 22 years old, he is fast becoming the main man at the Bernabeu, as he is Real’s leading scorer so far this season, netting 19 times across all competitions, one more than fellow forward Karim Benzema.

Nine of those strikes have come in the Brazil international’s 14 appearances since the World Cup break, while he has also netted in Real’s previous two home matches in the Champions League, against Celtic and Shakhtar Donetsk.

With Liverpool having to throw caution to the wind to stand any chance of getting back into the tie, that could further open up spaces for Vinicius to exploit – and it would be no surprise to see him end up on the scoresheet at least once.

Goals and cards on the agenda

Last month’s first leg underlined the attacking firepower that both these sides possess and over 2.5 goals in the match seems a solid base for any BuildABet, as it has occurred in three of the previous five meetings, including the last time the two teams clashed at the Bernabeu.

Liverpool’s need to go for goals from the off and Real’s pace on the break further underline the likelihood of plenty of goals on the night.

There could also be a flurry of cards brandished by German referee Felix Zwayer if tempers start to boil over, with Vinicius perhaps one of the surprise candidates to be cautioned. He has already picked up a team-high eight yellows in La Liga this season and has been cautioned in each of his previous three appearances in all competitions.

Liverpool could also have a prime candidate to be carded in Fabinho, as the Brazilian defensive midfielder may be regularly left isolated if the Reds are throwing players forward in attack.

Fabinho has picked up five yellows in his previous eight appearances and both he and Vinicius could end up in Zwayer’s notebook before the end of the night.
