5 Giants on Thin Ice Following 2024 NFL Draft

The 2024 NFL Draft is in the books and the New York Giants were able to come away with talented players on both sides of the ball. New York had six picks at its disposal and, for the most part, addressed multiple areas of need while simultaneously getting the best players available.

With six fresh faces set to join the Giants roster, six fewer roster spots remain for incumbent players. Some veterans will be replaced by incoming rookies, while others are feeling the heat more than they were a week ago. The draft allows a team to get younger and better at certain positions, which is helpful to the Giants as a whole but concerning for the following players.

A record six quarterbacks ended up going in the first 12 picks this year, but none went to the Giants. Instead, New York drafted LSU star wide receiver Malik Nabers. The good news for Jones is that the Giants used their pick to get him a playmaker rather than to draft his replacement. The bad news for Jones is there are no longer any excuses for him not to bounce back in 2024.

One of the few arguments made in Jones’s favor is that he’s never had a true No. 1 wide receiver at his disposal. Not only is Nabers immediately the best wide receiver Jones has ever had, but he’s arguably the top pass catcher in his entire draft class. If Jones cannot improve with Nabers in the fold, it’s unlikely he’ll ever be a successful starting quarterback.

The Giants also reportedly offered the Patriots a deal for the No. 3 overall pick, almost certainly intending to draft a quarterback. There was speculation that the Giants were interested in North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye, but the Patriots stayed pat and drafted Maye for themselves.

Jones may be safe for now, but the Giants’ actions during the draft prove they are not convinced he’s the long-term option under center.
